Sibyl is a cook of some note but she is not a gourmet cook. You will never find things finely chopped like the vegetables being sliced in the opening scene of Girl With a Pearl Earing. Sibyl loves to throw things into her pots and see what emerges. She has never been good with weights and measures and so anything is likely to happen and things never do turn out quite the same twice in a row. It is that country upbringing and the influence of the Country Women’s Association.
Darryl took up cooking late in life. It was Rick Stein who was responsible for what happened. But Darryl’s meals bore little resemblance to anything Stein would have whipped up. Darryl was a casserole man and relied on the Nursing Mother’s cookbook. Love him! I hid the book for awhile because he insisted on using casseroles that included unspeakable things like sultanas and pineapple. He found it and I had to sit looking as though I enjoyed it all. My poor mother would get generous serves and some found its way in to the dog’s bowl. Seriously though, sometimes the lad made a stunning casserole. Only problem was he was not good at the repeats of these.
